Phosphatidylcholine

Jake Ames, MD, HMD

Phosphatidylcholine is a phospholipid, which comprises up to 50% of cell membranes in newborns and children and starts declining as we age.   Our cell membranes are also composed of other phospholipids such as P-Serine, P-Inositol, and P-Ethanolamine.  Surfactant, which keeps our lungs healthy, is made from phosphatidylcholine (PC).

Our cell membranes are very thin, and it would take 10,000 flattened membranes to come to the thickness of a piece of paper.  It was once thought that our cell membranes were not too important, like a piece of cellophane with ion channels.  My medical school professor, Bruce Lipton proved that our cell membranes actually control how our DNA is turned on and off, and they are like the keyboard on your computer.  They are the software and our DNA is like a library of books.  Books contain information, but they do not think.  Healthy cell membranes will cause DNA to turn off cancer oncogenes and turn on tumor suppressor genes.

These days we all have heavy metals and chemical poisons in our cells and cell membranes, not to mention many of us are low in choline, which makes up phosphatidylcholine.

Foods with the highest phosphatidylcholine are eggs, liver, and soybeans (Humans should not be eating soybeans). This is one reason I have patients who are pregnant eat at least 6-8 eggs a day.

I use oral and intravenous phosphatidylcholine for the following diseases:
1:  Alzheimer’s disease
2:  Multiple sclerosis
3:  Parkinson’s disease
4:  Lou Gehrig disease (ALS)
5:  Neuropathy
6:  Strokes
7:  Generalized atherosclerosis
8:  Seizure disorders
9:  Fatty liver
10:  Cancer
11:  Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
12:  Fibromyalgia
13.  Inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease)
14:  Psoriasis
15:  Neurodermatitis
16:  Radiation syndrome

All commercial phosphatidylcholine (PC) comes from lecithin.  It is used in foods, cosmetics, and chocolates.
If lecithin has 30% PC, it can be labeled as phosphatidylcholine.  Triple lecithin contains 35% PC, which qualifies it to be labeled phosphatidylcholine.  These products are packed in oil and your body has to break the PC down into its constituent parts.  These products do not raise RBC phosphatidylcholine.

Oil free PC forms liposomes, and it is absorbed as PC, and raises red blood cell PC.  Only three companies in the United States have 100% oil free PC:  BodyBio, NutraSal, Xymogen 4:1, which is produced by BodyBio, and Essentiale Forte in Europe

PC converts to acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter.
Phosphatidylcholine also plays a role in membrane-mediated cell signaling and activation of many enzymes.

Contraindications

Allergy to PC
Antiphospholipid syndrome
Infants due to the alcohol content

Pregnancy

May possibly use PC during pregnancy and lactation, but only on the advice of a doctor!

Drug Interactions

Not known at this time.

Side-effects

Diarrhea
Nausea, rare
Fatigue (temporary)
Temporary elevation of HDL, LDL and liver enzymes
Phlebitis or thrombophlebitis if the IV is given to quickly.

If you are going to get IV PC, I recommend Essentiale ® N or obtaining IV phosphatidylcholine from a reputable compounding pharmacy.

Oral dosing is 2 capsules 3 times a day with food; maintenance dose is 1 capsule 3 times a day.

If one cannot afford oral PC, eat eggs and liver.  Vegetarians may be at risk for having low choline and phosphatidylcholine.
