Treating Parkinson's Disease Holistically

Parkinson's disease is a multi-factorial disease with environmental and genetic causes. It can be due to heavy metal exposure such as lead, mercury, and aluminum.  Excess manganese can also cause it.  It can be due to insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides.  I think it’s a combination of genetic and environmental factors.  Genetics accounts for 10-15% of Parkinson’s disease.  Head trauma (American football, soccer, boxing) can also cause Parkinson’s disease.  Whatever the causes, it is caused by the progress loss of dopamine-producing neurons in the brain, especially in an area called the substantia nigra.  These nerves produce a neurotransmitter called dopamine which is involved in movement.

Oxidative and reductive stress can damage or destroy mitochondrial functional which affects neurons by increasing reactive oxygen species (free radicals).

Pathology

Lewy Bodies:  These are abnormal protein aggregates mainly consisting of alpha-synuclein protein and are found in all cases of Parkinson’s disease.  They cause neuronal dysfunction and eventually death of the neurons.  These are mainly found in the substantia nigra region of the brain.

Neuroinflammation: Microglia: These are immune cells in the central nervous system which become activated and release pro-inflammatory cytokines and reactive oxygen species.

Astrocytes:  These are glia cells that support neurons.  They can become activated and release inflammatory molecules

T lymphocytes: It is hypothesized that these can also release inflammatory chemicals in the brain.  The primary immune cells in the brain are microglia and astrocytes.

Lab Tests:  There are no blood tests specifically to diagnose Parkinson’s disease, but I check inflammatory markers.  I check CRP-HS (<1 mg/dL), fibrinogen (<300 mg/dL) ESR (Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate) (around 5 mm/hour), D-Dimer (0-0.5 mg/L), MTHFR mutation, complete iron panel, vitamins B1, B6, B12, folate, 25-OH vitamin D, vitamin A.  I do routine blood tests to check the general health of my patients.  They include:  CBC, Full Chemistry Panel, Lipid Panel, Homocysteine (4-6 umol/L), Lipoprotein (a) (<20 mg/dL), Urinalysis, DHEA-Sulfate (250-300 ug/dL men and women), Progesterone, Pregnenolone, Estradiol (men and women), Estrone (women menopausal), FSH (<20 IU/L women menopausal), total and free testosterone.  Sometime I check IgM Western Blot Lyme test from Igenex.

Supplements for Parkinson’s disease:  These are either involved in making dopamine or regulating dopamine:  L-tyrosine, L-Phenylalanine, Vitamins B6, B9 (Folate), D3, iron, and magnesium.  Oral and IV phosphatidylcholine (www.bodybio.com & www.nutrasal.com)  These are the only two companies in the U.S. that make 100% phosphatidylcholine.  Lithium orotate 20 mg a day.

Herbs for Parkinson’s disease:  Curcumin, Mucuna pruriens (Velvet Bean), Ginkgo biloba, Rhodiola rosea, Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera, and Bacopa monnieri

Methylene Blue 1% USP:  I find methylene blue a very good treatment for Parkinson’s disease.  Your doctor should advice you on the dosage.  I add vitamin C powder to it which reduces it to colorless.  I don’t know if this helps or doesn’t help therapeutically.  Some studies say do not add vitamin C, other studies and doctors who specialize in methylene blue tell me that it makes it work better.  You can try both approaches.  Time will tell.

Mesenchymal Stem Cells:  I have an anesthesiologist put stem cells in the spine which travels quickly to the brain.  I don’t have years of experience using stem cells, so I won’t comment on them now.  But my Alzheimer’s disease patients also get them.

IV Glutathione and IV Phosphatidylcholine:  Almost all of my Parkinson’s disease patients benefited from getting IV phosphatidylcholine followed by IV glutathione. Some of these patients would walk and talk normally for three days after getting the IV’s, then the IV would wear off.  So, I gave them the IV’s twice a week.  I don’t know why, but after 1-2 years, the IV’s would stop working.  I was not using methylene blue then.

Urine Fasting:  Last but not least is urine fasting.  I have a blog and video on this at www.drjakeames.com.  I have lots of experience with urine fasting curing my patients of their cancers, but I don’t have enough experience with urine fasting treating and curing Parkinson’s disease, so I can’t comment on it yet.  However, it detoxes chemicals faster and better than the FAR-IR sauna.  It makes your body make millions of stem cells.  The book to read is:  The Water of Life by John Armstrong.
