Lyme Disease Tests

Lyme Disease Tests

Jake Ames, MD, HMD

I have been treating Lyme disease since 1993 seeing three to five Lyme patients daily.  My brother-in-law died from Lyme disease.  He had Lou Gehrig disease (ALS).  So far, all of my ALS patients had Lyme disease.  Most of my multiple sclerosis (MS) patients have Lyme disease.  I see Lyme disease in many of my patients with Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, environmental and food allergies, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and many autoimmune diseases.  It’s the great imitator of many diseases like syphilis was in the 1800’s.

This blog will talk about lab testing for chronic Lyme disease.  Since the majority of you with Lyme disease have chronic fatigue or fibromyalgia, I am going to give you very comprehensive labs to do, so you’ll know what you need to do to get your health back.

Many patients with chronic Lyme disease have lost their jobs and medical insurance.  If they get on a state medical insurance, their plan will not cover many of these tests.

Don’t worry.  I will talk about treatments in another blog.  We can work within your budget.

Having a lab value in the reference range does not necessarily mean that you are at optimal levels.  I will tell you optimal ranges in another blog.

These are the basic labs that adults over age 20 need:

1:  Complete Blood Count (CBC)
2:  Full Chemistry Panel including the Lipid Panel, Hepatic Panel, GGT, ionized calcium, A/G ratio
3:  DHEA-Sulfate
4:  Pregnenolone
5:  FSH, Estradiol, Estrone, Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG) for women in perimenopause or menopause.
6:  Total and Free Testosterone
7:  Progesterone
8:  Fibrinogen
9:  CRP-HS (Make sure you get the HS)
10:  MTHFR Mutation
11:  Lipoprotein (a)
12:  Homocysteine
13:  Total T4, Total T3, Free T4, Free T3, TSH, reverse T3
14:  Do antithyroglobulin antibody and antimicrosomal antibody (thyroid peroxidase antibody) in anyone over age thirteen with a family history of hypothyroidism.
15:  Urinalysis

16:  Hair Elements (This test exactly) from

17:  Take your afternoon, resting oral temperatures 5 days in a row at least 2 hours after eating with a digital basal thermometer accurate to 1/100 of a degree.

18:  Adrenal Stress Index (ASI) by Diagnos-Techs™ located in Kent, WA

19:  TBRF Lyme Western Blot IgM from IgeneX Inc. (www.igenex.com)  This is my favorite lab in the U.S. to test for tick-borne infections.  Another lab that I use is Fry Laboratories, L.L.C. (www.frylabs.com).  Both of these labs are excellent.  To be really thorough, you must test for coinfections.  The IgeneX IgM Lyme Western Blot is a good starting test if you are on a limited budget.

20:  Muscle response testing (MRT) from a doctor who has been doing NeuroModulation Technique for many years  (www.nmt.md).  Dr. Les Feinberg founded NMT.  I consider him one of the best allergists on earth.  He is also an expert in diagnosing and treating infectious diseases.

Some of you will need more comprehensive testing, especially if you think you also have a mold illness.  If you are someone who has seen many doctors and are not getting well, then you may need these tests.

1:  HLA DR and HLA DQ Oligotyping (Accurate to 5 digits, very important)
2:  VIP - Vasoactive Intestinal Polypeptide
3:  TGF Beta-1 - Transforming Growth Factor Beta-1
4:  MSH - Melanocyte Stimulating Hormone
5:  Antigliadin (AGA) antibodies, IgA, IgG
6:  TGF Beta-1 - Transforming Growth Factor Beta-1
7:  Nasal swab for MARCoNS (Multiple Antibiotic Resistant Coagulase Negative Staphylococci)
8:  ACTH (8 AM)
9:  Cortisol (8 AM)
10:  C4a
11:  Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF)
12:  Anticardiolipins (ACLA)
13:  ADH/Osmolality
14:  Matrix Metallopeptidase 9 (MMP-9)
15:  Leptin
16: IgG, IgA, IgM
17:  IgG Subclasses

Do you have any root canals?  Do you have any mercury amalgam dental fillings?  Do you have periodontal disease or gingivitis?  It is very important to have your mouth, throat, neck, and teeth thoroughly evaluated by a biological dentist.

You will learn much about your health with these tests.  It is important to see a Lyme literate physician.  I have been treating Lyme disease since 1993, and I am learning new tests and ways to treat Lyme disease monthly.
